10 on 10: square crop

Welcome to this month’s addition of “10 on 10”- a blog circle in which a group of us share 10 photos on the 10th of each month based on a commonly chosen theme.  This month’s theme: the square crop.

Because cropping an image changes its entire composition, and therefore feel, I struggled more with this theme than any of our previous “10 on 10” topics.  I’m just not a square crop person- I envision my images in rectangles… traditional, 4×6 aspect-ratio rectangles.  I guess I’m not much of a rule breaker.  Even on Instagram, which forces a square crop in their feed, I still convert nearly all of my shots back to a rectangle… I just can’t seem to make that square crop feel right.  (Hooray for “Squaready”- an awesome little app that gives you back control of your Instagram composition.)
For this month’s challenge, instead of shooting to fit the theme as I normally do, I selected images taken in the last three months to re-edit.   When Kelly first start talking about a vision for this blog circle, her goal was to find a home for many of the photos taken each month that never made it into a blog post or onto her website.  I have so many of those too.  Homeless images that never go anywhere- the downside to digital photography.
So this month, I embraced a new challenge of attempting to create something a little outside of my comfort zone, while also having the chance to recycle a few images that otherwise may have remained untouched…

Thanks for looking and as always, comments are welcome!  If you have thoughts on how this square crop worked out, please share!  And before you go, continue on in our blog circle to check out Kelly Patton of K. Rox Photography in Brooklyn, New York, to see what her interpretation of the square crop looks like here!

Oh, love these! I am so glad you went back and played around with some older images. These are gorgeous – I love your black and white conversions here – and I think they work well in square format. Bravo!
