the polar vortex and other moments in January

What?  How is January already over?!
Ok, so I have realized that it has become increasingly difficult to find time to share personal blog posts (or… to blog period.)  And I’m finding it just as difficult to pick up my big camera to photograph my own family.  So when thinking about personal photography projects for 2014, I chose the simple route… a 365 project (one personal photo, every day, for a year) taken solely with my iPhone.  Because my phone is rarely detached from my body, I do not have an excuse.  I also have come to love the freedom and ease of iPhone shots… compose, snap, go.  And at the end of this year, I will have a complete album of how we spent 2014.
If you’d like to follow along, you can see this daily project progress over on Instagram: @juliatulley.

So what did January look like?

  • January started with a snowy bang and the term “polar vortex” became a thing.
  • Chicago was colder than Antarctica and the INSIDE of our windows were covered in ICE and SNOW each morning.  School was canceled for two days making the children of Chicago collectively stir crazy, to put it mildly.  Our family took several trips to The Museum of Science and Industry just to run around.
  • I spent the month preparing to leave my University position (and the world of scientific research) and to make a big transition to work within the photography industry full time.  I will be joining a fantastic company that you will for sure be hearing much more about.  I am not so great with change but couldn’t be more excited for this big new adventure to begin.
  • I traveled to Phoenix for a week to attend ImagingUSA, a large national photography conference, to learn about all things photography-related.  I also had the great opportunity to spend time with some of the awesome crew that I will be working with in my new position… how do I NOT have photos of that?  I think I was so tired from the long days, I lacked the ability to use a camera… the same thing happened to me at Imaging last year.
  • After months of studying, I took and passed (whew!!) the Certified Professional Photographer (CPP) written exam.  I am now halfway through the process of earning the distinction of CPP.
  • I flew back home to more snow.
  • We painted, colored, read, and got really creative indoors.  Artwork adorns our walls as the result of the multiple Snowpocalyses.
  • I dreamed about warm summer days in Michigan.
  • More dangerously low temperatures caused school to close for another two days.  Meanwhile my work office was so cold I had to wear a ski coat, scarf, and gloves.  I drank a lot of hot tea.
  • But you know what?  Cold temperatures create the most glorious colors at sunrise and sunset and I took photos of both.
  • The month ended with a trip to the Field Museum, watching my kiddo explore and learn, and you just can’t beat that.

Goodbye January, you frigid but exciting month.  Cannot wait for all the fun changes February is about to bring!
